Textbook

R. D. Cook and S. Weisberg (1999), Applied Regression Including Computing and Graphics, New York: Wiley.

Computing

All computing uses Arc which is written in Luke Tierney's Lisp-Stat language. The textbook provides the manual for Arc. The program is installed on the School's Unix workstations and on the PCs in the computer labs in both Ford and ClaOff. You can download it for any PC or Macintosh from http://www.stat.umn.edu/arc.

Web Site

The WWW site for this class is reached from http://www.stat.umn.edu, and then selecting Classes, and then the course number. The Web will contain announcements, a listing of email received from the class, and an occasional additional data set.

Homework & Lab Session

There will be approximately weekly assignments. Although the homework will not be graded, it will be collected. Students will be expected to be able to discuss their solutions to problems in class.

Exams and Grading

There will be three exams in this class, tentatively scheduled for November 9, November 29, and the final exam on Monday, December 18 from 1:30-3:30. At least one, and possibly two, of the exams will be a take-home exam. Grading is weighted as follows: each exam except the final, 25% each, final exam, 35%, and homework/class participation 15%. Students who fail to complete all work will receive a grade based on the work done. Grades of incomplete will be given only in extraordinary circumstances, and only after negotiation with the instructor.

Collaboration

Collaboration on homework is strongly encouraged. Collaboration on exams is absolutely prohibited. Any students who work together on exams will be given a failing grade in the course.

Handouts

I will make use of handouts. Copies of the handouts are available on the Web server in the Handouts section.
