Designing Experiments
Spring 2005 -- Assignments
- January 28:
- Reading: Chapters 1 and 2.
- Page 35-37, problems 2, 3, 4, 7, 11ab (all short answers!).
- Problem 14. Add the following questions:
- Problem 14(c). For the design in part (b), why randomize the order of
presentation? Why not always do first control then treatment?
(You might be interested to know that without randomization this
is called a quasi-experiment. Perhaps you can think of a
treatment-versus-control comparison like the one in this problem
for which randomization is not possible.)
- Problem 14(d). Which design do you expect to be better, 14(a), 14(b) or
14(c)? Why?
- February 4:
- Reading: Chapter 2, pages 38-54 (skip the last section) and Chapter 4. Skip Chapter 3.
- Page 57, problems 1-4, 8, 9. Use JMP for these problems. The data are in the file hamster2.jmp. For problem 4, you may want to use JMP to get the means, but draw the figure by hand. We will learn later how to get the program to do this for you.
