Computing

Since this is an applied statistics course, the computing requirements are fairly heavy. All computing will be done using Arc, the free software that accompanies the textbook.

To complete this course, you must have access to a relevant computer system. The systems you can use include:

1.
A fairly recent Macintosh system, with at least 16 mb of memory and a hard disk. You will also need a word processing program like Microsoft Word.
2.
A PC with Windows 95/98/NT. You will also need a program such as WordPerfect for Windows.
The University's microcomputer labs have the relevant equipment available. To do printing in the lab, you will need to purchase a laser printer card from the bursar's office. Apart from printing, the labs are free for students during the quarter. The software is available on all PCs and Macs in Classroom Office Building.

Homework

There will be approximately weekly assignments. Selected homework problems will be graded by the TA and returned. Solutions to problems will be available in the library and on the WWW.

Exams and Grading

There will be two in-class exams and an in-class final exam. The first exam will be given when we complete Chapter 7; the second exam after we complete Chapter 12. The final will be given on Friday, May 12, 2000, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The weight in determining grades is: Homework, 15%; first exam, 25%; second exam, 25%, and final exam, 35%.

Students who fail to complete all work will receive a grade based on the work done. Grades of incomplete will be given only in extraordinary circumstances, and only after negotiation with the instructor.

Web page

Announcements, handouts, assignments, and other interesting stuff is available on the class webpage, at www.stat.umn.edu, and then follow the links to classes. I will also make use of email to keep students informed about the course.

This publication/material is available in alternative formts upon request. Please contact Carol, School of Statistics, 352 ClaOff, 625-7030.

Outline

The course will generally follow the textbook, starting with Chapter 1.
