Abstract
In this article, we review and extend an emerging theory for dimension
reduction in regression settings that provides a context for the
construction, characterization and interpretation of low-dimensional
graphical displays of the data. Our focus is on fundamental ideas at
the population level, rather than on particular implementations for use
in practice.
