APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Prospective MS and Ph.D students are encouraged to apply for admission well before the anticipated entry date. Graduate School deadlines for application submission are as follows:

        ENTERING SEMESTER APPLICATION DEADLINE
        Fall June 15
        Spring October 15
        Summer March 15

There are normally no graduate level courses in Statistics during the summer.
Those applying for financial aid must have all supporting material in by February 1 (January 10 is the deadline for Graduate School Fellowships).
Because the program in statistics is closely tied to the September through May academic year, students who enter other than in the fall semester may find it more difficult to select appropriate courses.

Prospective students wishing to be admitted to the graduate program must complete the Application for Admission form . In addition those wishing to be considered for financial aid must complete the Application for Financial Assistance, School of Statistics form . Finally, international students must complete the International Student Financial Certification Statement form. These forms can be obtained by writing the School of Statistics or using the links below.

Applicants wishing to be considered for financial aid must take the Graduate Record Examination General Test (GRE). TOEFL scores are required of applicants whose native language is not English, and such applications will not be considered before TOEFL scores or their equivalent are received.
The minimum acceptable score on the TOEFL is 550. A score of 213 on the computer-based test taken after June 1998 is equal to 550. Except in rare instances, a TOEFL score of 600 (250 on computer-based test) is necessary to be considered for financial aid for those applicants whose native language is not English. By Minnesota State law, teaching assistants for whom English is a second language and who have not studied previously in the United States must pass a spoken English test, the SPEAK test, given by the University of Minnesota. If the exam is not passed, the student is required to take a remedial course in English. It is expected that all students who receive a teaching assistantship will have passed this exam by the end of their first year of graduate study. Official Transcripts and TOEFL test results should be sent to the Graduate School while letters of recommendation and GRE test results should be sent directly to the School of Statistics. Those who wish to be considered for a Graduate School Fellowship should also send an unofficial copy of their transcript directly to the School of Statistics by January 10.

The process of application involves a review of application materials by a committee of the School. A recommendation is made to the Graduate School, which makes the final decision and notifies the applicant. The Graduate School will not forward applications to the School of Statistics until official transcripts are complete and the application fee has been paid. Decisions on financial aid are made in a separate process during mid-March.
