Assignment 1

Due in class on Monday, January 24.

Reading
Read the introductory section on Statistical Thinking on pages xxv to xxxi. Also read Chapter 1. This assignment covers material in sections 1.1 and 1.2.
Graded Problems
Work and hand in the following problems. As with all the assignments from this class please present your work carefully - just getting a correct numerical answer is not sufficient for full credit. Show your work and explain the logic behand your answer. Write your conclusions in words in the context of the problem. For example a solution `` $\bar{X}=99.3213$'' will get very little credit - a solution ``the mean annual income of the sample of 100 male doctors is $99,321'' will get full credit. After the problems are graded the TA will put solutions on reserve in the Mathematics Library in Vincent Hall.
